Joe Abeyta | Shop Owner, Master Barber
"My career as a barber started early on for me without me even really knowing it. My brother started asking me for haircuts when we were in middle school. Our grandpa was the family barber at the time & he decided to pass down his clippers to me to learn how to cut my brother’s hair. It took me a solid year of messing up his haircuts until I finally started getting the hang of the craft. YouTube tutorials were solely how I learned in the beginning. Soon I’d have up to six or seven friends that became regulars. I cut their hair on my mom’s porch for years before moving to ABQ to attend UNM.
After two years of school at UNM, my auntie whom has been a hairdresser for over thirty years here in ABQ, suggested that I go to barber school at the same time as college. I was against the idea at first, until she introduced me to the owner of ABU Academy. His energy was one of a kind & he wanted to help see me succeed in both barber school and college. I started classes immediately after meeting with him & touring the school. Shortly after this, I found myself attending both UNM full-time & ABU part-time in the evenings & weekends.
After one full year, I received my license to cut hair in the state of New Mexico. A week later, I started at a shop across from UNM. I worked there until I completed my B.A. in Marketing at UNM. After graduating, I accepted a job with a company - not knowing whether it would be the right fit for me. During this period, I still tried to keep on as many clients as possible. After a few months with said company, I decided to put in my two-weeks and pursue my dream of opening up my own barbershop.
The rest was history… It’s been nine years that I’ve been consistently cutting hair in Albuquerque with my license as a Master Barber and over five years that I have owned, operated and have worked at EDo’s Barber Shop. My favorite part about cutting hair to this day is all of the connections I’ve made over the years. I often have conversations with clients about how I’ve been cutting their hair for over eight years now. To me, these connections are far worth much more than any others."
